About “Gallery Sentou”

Gallery Sentou is a Japanese ceramics gallery founded by Katsumasa Itagaki, whose first gallery specialising in Hagi ware has been running for over a decade in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Building upon this experience, Gallery Sentou was established to represent artists beyond any single regional tradition.

Ceramics occupy a unique space between human intention and natural process. Clay, glaze, fire, and atmosphere each play a role in shaping the final work, creating results that can never be entirely predicted or repeated. It is within this tension between control and chance that the distinctive beauty of ceramics emerges.

The gallery’s collection reflects the breadth and diversity of Japanese ceramics, encompassing traditions ranging from the ancient wood-fired wares of Bizen and Iga to the celebrated glazes of Mino and Seto. Within and beyond these traditions, Gallery Sentou represents contemporary ceramic artists whose work builds upon traditional techniques while forging new forms of expression. Through their practice, centuries-old traditions are reinterpreted for the present day, resulting in works that are deeply rooted in history yet hold unmistakably contemporary.
