Makoto Yamaguchi – Sansai Oribe Tea Bowl

This Sansai Oribe Tea Bowl was created by Makoto Yamaguchi, a highly regarded ceramic artist working in Seto, one of Japan’s most historic pottery centers.

Yamaguchi is best known for his Oribe works, while also exploring a wide range of traditional Mino ceramic styles and glazing techniques. His exceptional craftsmanship and distinctive artistic vision have earned him a devoted following among collectors both in Japan and abroad.

This tea bowl belongs to one of his recent Sansai (three-color) series.

The work is dominated by deep Oribe green, enriched by striking accents of cobalt blue created with gosu pigment. The vivid blue cutting through the dark green landscape creates a dramatic contrast, evoking a flash of light across a shadowed mountain range.

Layers of green, amber, white, and blue merge across the surface, forming a richly textured landscape that rewards prolonged viewing. The bold form and generous application of glaze create remarkable depth and presence, while every angle reveals a new and captivating scene.

From the dramatic exterior to the beautifully nuanced interior, this tea bowl exemplifies Yamaguchi’s ability to honor the traditions of Oribe ware while pushing them toward fresh contemporary expression.

A powerful and visually compelling work that showcases the creativity and technical mastery for which Makoto Yamaguchi is celebrated.
