This Shigaraki tea bowl was created by Kazuya Furutani, one of the leading contemporary potters working in Shigaraki.
Furutani is known for embracing the natural effects created by Shigaraki clay and wood firing, producing works that combine strength, character, and refinement. His pottery is highly regarded by collectors who appreciate the beauty of natural kiln effects.
This tea bowl displays a rich interplay of fiery orange hiiro markings and soft green natural ash glaze, creating the distinctive landscape for which Shigaraki ware is celebrated. The boldly carved form conveys the strength of the clay, while the gentle glaze tones bring a sense of balance and calm.

Kazuya Furutani

1976: Born in Shigaraki.
1995: Graduated from Shigaraki High school, design course.
1997: Graduated from Yamaguchi art college, art sculpture course.
1998: Graduated from Kyoto prefectural ceramic school.
Trained under his father, Michio Furutani.
2002: Made his own Anagama wood firing kiln.
2003: Selected for Japan traditional kogei exhibition of Kinki area. (6 times)
First solo exhibition at Ikebukuro Tobu department store.
2004: First solo exhibition at Dojima gallery.
First solo exhibition at Ginza Kuroda toen.
2005: Made new Anagama wood firing kiln.
2006: Made new Anagama wood firing kiln.
