Hiroyumi Suzuki – Black Kōrai Tea Bowl
This Black Kōrai Tea Bowl was created by Hiroyumi Suzuki, a ceramic artist based in Iga, Japan.
As a young artist, Suzuki traveled to Korea and spent several years studying ceramics before returning to Japan to establish his kiln in Iga. He continues to maintain strong ties with Korea, drawing upon a deep understanding of Yi Dynasty ceramics while also creating works inspired by traditional Japanese styles such as Iga, Shigaraki, and Shino ware.
His work has attracted a devoted following among collectors and tea practitioners alike. Even NIGO, the renowned entrepreneur and tea bowl collector, is known to visit his kiln, reflecting the broad appeal of Suzuki’s artistry.
The greatest charm of this tea bowl lies in its profound black surface.
This is not a simple black glaze. Subtle nuances emerge as the light changes, revealing remarkable depth and complexity beneath the darkness. It possesses a quiet presence that feels almost like solidified night.
The refined Kōrai-inspired form harmonizes beautifully with the serene black glaze. Inside the bowl, traces of the firing process create a rich landscape that brings depth and movement to an otherwise monochromatic world.
Combining a deep respect for Korean ceramics with a profound appreciation of Japanese ceramic traditions, this tea bowl embodies the quiet strength and elegance that define Hiroyumi Suzuki’s work.
