Kiseto Yellow seto Matcha chawan Teabowl. Takahiro Kato.
This Kiseto tea bowl was created by Takahiro Kato.
Although he is the grandson of the legendary potter Kato Tokuro, Kato has forged a path entirely his own. His work combines a deep understanding of ceramic tradition with a distinctly contemporary sensibility, making him one of the most distinctive voices in Japanese ceramics today.
The bowl is covered in a warm Kiseto glaze, accented by dramatic kiln effects and subtle green tones that emerge through the firing process. These natural variations create a landscape that is both quiet and powerful, inviting closer contemplation.
At the heart of Kato’s practice is a lifelong exploration of a fundamental question: “What is tea pottery?” His works are not intended merely to be admired, but to be held, used, and experienced through the act of making tea.
The bowl rests comfortably in the hands, while its gentle curves and balanced proportions enrich the experience of preparing and drinking matcha.
A compelling work that embodies the unique vision of one of Japan’s leading contemporary tea bowl artists.
