Shigaraki yohen matcha chawan teabowl, Kazuya Furutani. Shigaraki ware.
This flat tea bowl was created by Kazuya Furutani, a ceramic artist working in Shigaraki.
Flat tea bowls, known as hira-chawan, have long been appreciated during the warmer months because their wide shape allows matcha to cool more quickly. This piece embodies that refreshing seasonal character beautifully.
One of the most captivating features of this bowl is the rich kiln transformation created during wood firing. At its center, melted ash has formed a striking pool of bidoro, displaying subtle shades of green and blue that evoke the coolness of water.
At the same time, the powerful character of Shigaraki clay remains clearly present. The strength of the fired earth and the delicate beauty of the kiln effects exist in perfect balance, making this a bowl that can be enjoyed throughout the year.
A unique work shaped by flame, ash, and the artist’s mastery of the wood-firing process.
